FIA CEZ races at the foothills of the Alps

Just after the opening circuit event on Hungaroring, there was another race of Central European Zone Championship FIA CEZ last weekend.

This time, the race took place on another circuit where are, among other, also held F1 races – the super-modern Austrian Red Bull ring located in picturesque foothills of the Alps.

While the highest surrounding hills were still covered by remaining snow, the forecast for the circuit expected some rain. However, this fortunately did not come true. There were some showers on Friday evening but it got better on Saturday morning and later, in the afternoon, it was even sunny.

So the weather conditions for racing were almost perfect. Sadly, it is not possible to say the same about the conditions created by the organising agency during the race weekend. Despite the fact that Red Bull Ring is one of the most modern and most beautiful circuits of the world, the racers seemed puzzled rather too often. They could not believe what was possible to happen there. The chaos had begun even before the weekend itself. Free practice was allowed for “everything with four wheels”. The track was quickly filled by cars of different categories – LMP2, GT3, four liter prototypes, cup Chevrolets and Kia Picanto, which were sometimes driving more than 100 km/h slower than others. Moreover, there were as many cars as the circuit could bear.

Also the timekeepers had huge problems. The qualification times were not available even on Friday evening. Some of the racers had to hand in the times measured by their on-board computers. The mayhem continued on Saturday at starting grid. The organisers were moving the cars on positions which were different from those gained in the qualification.
